Don't Ignore Injustice in the World
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others."- Matthew 23:23
Jesus's message in Matthew 23:23 is clear: while religious practices like tithing are important, they should never overshadow the greater call to pursue justice, mercy, and faithfulness. It's easy to focus on the rituals of faith”attending church, reading your Bible, and praying regularly. These are good and necessary, but Jesus warns against elevating these practices above the need to address the injustices in the world around you.
Tithing was a well-established practice, rooted in Scripture, and it was never meant to be neglected. Leviticus 27:30 reminds us that "Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the Lord's; it is holy to the Lord."
Yet, while the Pharisees were meticulous in their tithing, they were blind to the suffering happening right outside the temple walls. Their obsession with religious duty caused them to overlook the weightier matters of the Law”caring for the poor, defending the vulnerable, and standing against injustice.
This is a challenge for you today. It's not enough to simply go through the motions of faith. God calls you to actively seek justice in a world that is often filled with unfairness and inequality. Your faith should compel you to care for the orphan, the widow, the poor, and the oppressed. Deuteronomy 15:7-8, 10 urges, If there is among you anyone in nee do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward your needy neighbor "Give liberally and be ungrudging when you do so."
Jesus's words remind you that true faith isn't just about personal devotion; it's about being a light in the darkness, a voice for those who have none, and a hand extended to those in need. Don't let your focus on religious practices cause you to ignore the pain and suffering around you. Instead, let your faith drive you to action”supporting those who are struggling, standing up against wrongs, and showing mercy to those who are hurting.
In a world where injustice can often feel overwhelming, remember that your commitment to God includes a commitment to the welfare of all His children. The Gospel calls you to seek justice, correct oppression, and show compassion to those in need. This is the heart of true faith”loving God by loving others and working to bring His justice to a broken world.
