Don't Major in the Minors
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others."- Matthew 23:23
Jesus had a powerful way of cutting through the noise to reveal what truly matters. In Matthew 23:23, He confronts the religious leaders of His day, exposing their tendency to major in minors”to focus on trivial religious duties while neglecting the deeper, more significant aspects of faith. His words are a warning that still resonates today.
In our walk with God, it's easy to get caught up in the things we're "supposed" to do. We attend church, tithe, and follow the rules, and we sometimes think that's enough. But Jesus challenges this mindset. He tells the Pharisees, and us by extension, that while these practices are important, they are not the heart of what it means to follow Him. When we prioritize these duties over the “weightier matters of justice, mercy, and faithfulness, we risk trivializing our faith and missing the bigger picture.
Today, the same danger exists. There are countless voices, especially in our digital age, that amplify issues that don't deserve the level of attention they receive. You might see debates raging on social media about whether Christians should attend certain concerts, wear specific clothing, or engage in particular lifestyle choices. These discussions, while not entirely unimportant, can often overshadow the more pressing concerns of our world.
When you look at the state of our world”wars, injustices, and the suffering of countless people”it becomes clear that many of the issues that dominate religious discourse are distractions from what truly matters. Jesus calls us to focus on justice, to show mercy, and to be faithful in a world that desperately needs these things. It's not that the smaller matters don't have their place, but when they become our primary focus, we've lost sight of what it means to truly live out the Gospel.
The challenge for you today is to not make your faith about earning extra credit for doing the basics. Instead, let your life reflect the deeper, weightier matters that Jesus emphasized. Stand up for justice, extend mercy to those in need, and remain faithful in your walk with God. These are the things that truly honor Him and make a lasting impact in the world. Don't get caught up in the minor”focus on what really counts.
