Count Your Blessings
"Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits," - Psalm 103:2
As a believer or follower of Christ, you've likely heard the hymn that starts, "When upon life's billows you are tempest-tossed, when you are discouraged, thinking all is lost..." These words by Johnson Oatman Jr. from over a century ago still resonate deeply today. Life often throws us into storms—moments of uncertainty, fear, or disappointment. In those times, it's easy to feel overwhelmed, to believe that nothing is going right and everything is against us.
But Oatman's hymn reminds us of a simple yet powerful truth: count your blessings. When you feel like everything is going wrong, take a moment to count the things that are going right. Count your blessings—not just in a vague, general sense, but intentionally, one by one.
Why is this important? Because it shifts our perspective. It moves our focus from what's lacking to what's present. It redirects our thoughts from despair to gratitude. In the midst of life's storms, God calls us to remember His goodness and faithfulness. He invites us to reflect on His countless blessings in our lives.
When you start counting, you might be surprised at how much there is to be thankful for. It could be the support of loved ones, the provision of a job, the beauty of creation, or even the simple joys of everyday life. Each blessing, no matter how small, is a reminder of God's care and provision.
So today, amidst whatever challenges you may be facing, take a moment to count your blessings. Write them down if it helps. Reflect on the ways God has shown His love and faithfulness to you. As you do, you'll find your perspective shifting. Your worries may not disappear, but they will be overshadowed by a greater sense of gratitude and trust in God's sovereignty.
