The Power Of Relationship
"I can do all things through him who strengthens me." - Philippians 4:13
I remember being in Los Angeles and being invited to an exclusive restaurant/lounge. Someone who saw me there was surprised and wondered how I had gotten in. Had I paid the price? Had I earned my way in? I told them I was there not because of my own credentials, but because I was good friends with a member. In other words, I gained access not because of anything I had done or because of who I was, but because I had a relationship with the right person.
This experience reminds me of the basis of any power we have as Christians. Our power comes from our relationship with the right person, Jesus Christ. The people Paul was writing to in Philippians understood religious power and the influence that came from being connected to the Roman Empire. Paul wanted them to know that the power they had within them was greater than the power of the emperor or any worldly power. In Christ, they had access to a power that allowed them to do all things through Him who strengthened them.
There are many people today who draw their sense of power from their job title, their position in society, or the amount of money they have in the bank. But Paul proclaims that our true power is within us, rooted in our relationship with Jesus Christ. Jesus proclaimed to His followers after His ascension that they would receive power once the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they would be His witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
As a Christ follower, live your life with the awareness that the power we possess is not our own, but comes from our relationship with Jesus Christ. Let's draw on His strength and live our lives as a testament to His power working within us. Remember, you have the power within you, through your relationship with Christ. Stay connected to Him and let His power guide and strengthen you in all that you do.
