Plugged Into God's Power
"I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith." - Ephesians 3:16-17
Like most of you, I enjoy the conveniences that come with owning electronic devices. Inside my home, I have devices that are designed to make my life easier, to perform certain tasks more efficiently, and even to make life better. In my kitchen, there is a juicer, a blender, a microwave oven, and a toaster. In the family room, there is a flat-screen television, a PlayStation for the kids, and a sound system for listening to music.
In just about every room of the house, there is some gadget or gizmo to enhance our quality of life. But here’s the thing: with all that these devices are intended to do to make life better, with all of their capabilities and abilities, none of that potential becomes actual until the devices are plugged in.
Without a connection to the power, the potential of the devices lays dormant, and the devices are merely good ideas without purpose, without function, and without a reason for being. None of the benefits can be experienced, and none of it comes to life until they are connected to the power.
In a real sense, the writer of our text is trying to convey the same thing about the Christian life. We can be filled with a range of possibilities, and we can be made by our Maker for a host of capabilities, but that potential doesn’t become actuality unless and until we are plugged into God’s power. Paul penned these words to his friends in Ephesus to let them know that he has been and continues to pray for them.
The sense was that these new believers had a head knowledge of God but lacked an understanding of His power. Their ability to fulfill their purpose and walk in victory depended upon them harnessing the power of God in their lives. So, Paul prayed for them to be strengthened by God’s power, without which they were powerless to do what God wanted them to do. A believer who doesn’t tap into God’s power is like a car with no gas. It might look good, but it’s not going anywhere.
So, today, let’s examine our lives. Are we plugged into God’s power? Are we relying on our own strength, or are we allowing the Holy Spirit to strengthen our inner being? God’s power is available to us, and it is essential for us to fulfill His purpose for our lives. Let’s connect to that power and let Christ dwell in our hearts through faith.
