Walking in the Spirit
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." - Galatians 5:22-23
To truly understand what it means to walk in the Spirit, we need to first define some key terms. When we talk about the "flesh," we're referring to the parts of our personality that have been wounded by negative life experiences.
These wounds are often weighed down by pain, traumatic memories, harmful feelings, and damaging beliefs. When triggered by new experiences, they cause us to react based on the pain of the past rather than the reality of the present. This, in turn, leads us to "miss the mark" or, as Scripture calls it, to "sin."
But there is hope. When we talk about the "Spirit" in Galatians 5:22-23, we're not just referring to the Holy Spirit, but to the Divine Essence within each of us. This is the God-image, our unique divine consciousness, the part of us made in the likeness of God. To walk in the Spirit means to live according to this divine nature within us. It’s not about "catching the Holy Spirit" or having a mystical experience. It's about embodying the character and qualities of God in our everyday lives.
Jesus said in Luke 17:21 that the Kingdom of God is within. This means we don’t have to look outside of ourselves to find it. The Spirit is already within us; we just have to walk in it. Walking in the Spirit is about living a life that reflects love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—the fruits of the Spirit.
So, how do we apply this in our daily lives? Start by recognizing which part of you is driving your responses. Is it the wounded flesh or the divine spirit? When you feel anger, fear, or shame taking the wheel, pause and remind yourself of the Spirit within you.
Choose to respond with love, joy, and peace. When past traumas trigger negative reactions, remember that you are more than your past wounds. You are a reflection of God’s image, capable of living out His divine qualities.
Walking in the Spirit requires daily commitment and mindfulness. It’s about choosing to let God’s nature within you guide your actions and responses. When we do this, we not only heal our own wounds but also become a source of healing and love for others.
