Purpose in Pain
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."- Romans 8:28
Yesterday, we talked about how everyone experiences pain and how Jesus embraced His betrayal, knowing it was part of God’s greater plan. Today, let’s dive deeper into how Jesus uses our pain for our good.
Think about Joseph’s story in the Old Testament. Joseph, beloved by his father Jacob, was sold into slavery by his jealous brothers. Imagine the depth of betrayal and hurt he must have felt. He was taken to Egypt, falsely accused, and thrown into prison. But through all these trials, God was with Joseph. Each painful event was a step toward a greater purpose.
Joseph’s journey from the pit to the palace wasn’t a straight path. It was filled with ups and downs, heartache, and struggle. Yet, every moment of pain had a purpose. Eventually, Joseph rose to become the second most powerful man in Egypt. When famine struck, he was in a position to save not only Egypt but also his own family.
In Genesis 50:20, Joseph says to his brothers, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”
Your pain may not make sense right now. It might feel overwhelming and purposeless. But just like Joseph, God can use your struggles for your good. Every tear, every heartbreak, every disappointment—God sees it all, and He’s working it into His divine plan for your life.
Reflect on your own experiences of pain. How has God used difficult times to shape you, teach you, or position you for something greater? Maybe it’s not clear yet, and that’s okay. Trust that, like Joseph, your story isn’t over. The pain you’re feeling today is part of the preparation for the blessings of tomorrow.
Jesus uses our pain to grow us, to strengthen our faith, and to bring us closer to Him. When you feel like giving up, remember that God is with you in every trial. He is weaving your experiences into a story of redemption and grace. Hold on to the promise of Romans 8:28. Trust that in all things—even the painful ones—God works for the good of those who love Him.
