Holistic Spirituality
"Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers." - 3 John 1:2
In the Western world, our approach to spirituality often leans towards compartmentalization. We recognize that as humans we consist of 3 parts—spirit, mind, and body—but unfortunately, we tend to devalue the body. Throughout Western philosophy and religious thought, the body has been viewed as inherently sinful, separate from the mind and spirit.
This dualistic mindset has deep historical roots, from the teachings of Plato and Descartes to the doctrines of Gnostic Christianity and Augustine. The consequence of this separation has been evident throughout human history.
Even within the church, remnants of this dualistic thinking persist. Yet, we must recognize the inherent value and significance of the body. God, in His infinite wisdom and love, chose to inhabit a physical body in the person of Jesus Christ. He identifies the church as the body of Christ, emphasizing the sacredness of our physical selves.
I want you to see the words of the apostle John: "Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers." John's prayer brings attention to the misconception of physical and spiritual well-being. He acknowledges the importance of caring for one's body alongside nurturing one's soul.
See, our physical health impacts our ability to fulfill our spiritual calling. When our bodies are ailing, when our vitality is diminished, our capacity to serve and impact the Kingdom is hindered. Therefore, it's essential that we prioritize our holistic well-being—body, mind, and spirit.
As you walk in faith, I want to challenge you to embrace a holistic view of spirituality—one that honors the body as a temple of the Holy Spirit. We all should steward our physical health with the same diligence and devotion as we do our spiritual growth.
