Illuminating God's Desire
"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house." - Matthew 5:14-15
In the midst of darkness, Jesus declared an important truth to His followers: they were the light of the world. This imagery of light holds deep significance, illustrating not only our identity but also our purpose in the kingdom of God.
Imagine a city perched atop a hill, its radiant glow piercing through the darkness, impossible to conceal. Similarly, Jesus likened His followers to a lamp placed on a stand, illuminating the entire house. Just as light naturally dispels darkness, so are we called to reveal the truth of God's love, grace, and righteousness in a world shrouded in shadows.
It's crucial to understand that our visibility as bearers of light is intentional. We are not called to shrink back in fear or shame, hiding our identity as children of God. On the contrary, we are commissioned to boldly let our light shine, unapologetically and unashamedly.
But what does it mean to "let" our light shine? It means relinquishing control and allowing the light of Christ within us to radiate outward. It's not about self-promotion or seeking attention for personal gain. Instead, it's a humble acknowledgment of our role as vessels of God's truth and love.
In essence, we are not the source of light; rather, we are conduits through which God's light shines forth. Like the familiar childhood song proclaims, "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine," our mandate is to allow the light of Christ to permeate every aspect of our lives and illuminate the world around us.
So, as you go about your day, remember that you carry within you the light of God's love. Let it shine brightly for all to see, revealing the beauty of God's desire for His creation.
