Applied with Care
"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." - Ephesians 4:29
Have you ever considered the significance of salt? It sits on our tables as an option, waiting to be used when we sit down to eat. Yet, its effectiveness depends entirely on whether or not we choose to use it. Jesus Himself spoke of the importance of salt, cautioning that if it loses its savor, its effect, and its value, it becomes useless.
This sobering reminder reflects our role as believers in the Kingdom of God. We are strategically placed in life to make a difference. Yet, if we fail to positively impact the world around us, we lose our value in advancing God's kingdom. Believers who do not leave the world unchanged and who fail to influence others positively are of no value.
But here's a crucial lesson: just as salt must be applied carefully in the right doses, so too must our presence in the lives of others be handled with care. Just as excessive salt can ruin a good meal and lead to negative health consequences, our actions and words, if used excessively, can push people away from the church rather than draw them closer.
Just think of that person who constantly points out others' faults without showing grace or love. Even if their words are true, they lack the right spirit and can come across as judgmental or condescending. As Christians, we must not be irritants, causing discomfort for the sake of it. Instead, our speech should always be gracious, seasoned with salt, reflecting the love and compassion of Christ.
Colossians 4:6 reminds us to let our speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that we may know how to answer everyone. This verse underscores the importance of speaking with kindness and wisdom, ensuring that our words uplift and encourage rather than tear down.
Be mindful of how you interact with others, applying the salt of your influence with care and wisdom. Let your words and actions reflect the love of Christ, drawing others to Him and glorifying His name in all that you do.
