True Gain in Knowing Christ
"But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ." - Philippians 3:7-8
In Philippians 3:7-8, Paul reveals a profound truth about where true gain is found. He shares his own journey of realizing that the things he once considered valuable and worthy of pursuit were actually detrimental to his spiritual well-being. Paul uses strong language to emphasize the insignificance of worldly achievements compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ.
Paul's words challenge us to examine our own pursuits and priorities. How often do we place our confidence and find our joy in the things of this world? Whether it's religious performance or personal achievement, Paul reminds us that these things ultimately lead to emptiness and loss.
The word Paul uses to describe his former pursuits, "Zemia," carries connotations of disadvantage, detriment, and damage. He emphasizes that trying to find joy in worldly accomplishments only leads to spiritual impoverishment. It's like stepping in dog poop – a foul and unpleasant experience that hinders us from moving forward.
Paul's perspective undergoes a radical transformation when he encounters Christ. He realizes that all his religious credentials and societal achievements pale in comparison to the surpassing worth of knowing Jesus intimately. Paul considers everything he once valued as rubbish, or even worse, as dog dung, compared to the joy of knowing Christ.
This passage challenges us to reassess our priorities and redefine what true gain looks like. Instead of chasing after worldly success and recognition, let us pursue a deeper relationship with Christ. True joy and fulfillment are found not in external accomplishments, but in the intimate knowledge of our Lord and Savior.
As we align our hearts with Paul's perspective, may we be willing to count everything else as loss for the sake of gaining Christ. Let us treasure the surpassing worth of knowing Him above all else, for in Him alone do we find true and lasting satisfaction.
