Finding Safety in Your Body
"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." - Psalm 34:18
In our pursuit of healing, it's easy to fall into the trap of seeking solutions solely within the realm of the mind. We attend therapy sessions, read self-help books, and engage in intellectual discourse, hoping that understanding alone will bring about transformation. However, true healing often eludes us because the roots of our pain run much deeper – they reside within our bodies.
You can spend years analyzing your trauma, attending countless conferences, and even obtaining a thorough intellectual grasp of your struggles, yet still find yourself wrestling with the same issues day after day. It's not until we confront the trauma stored within our bodies that genuine healing can begin to take place.
Just as lifestyle choices can lead to physical ailments like high blood pressure or cancer, deeply ingrained habits and patterns of behavior can persist despite our intellectual understanding of their harmful effects. We may comprehend the irrationality of our actions, yet still find ourselves unable to break free from their grip because the habit isn't rooted in our minds – it's deeply embedded within our bodies.
Addressing trauma requires more than just cognitive therapy or medication; it demands a profound reconnection with our bodies and a rediscovery of safety within ourselves. Safety provides the fertile ground upon which healing can flourish, allowing us to retrain our senses, reprogram our nervous systems, and ultimately reconnect with ourselves, others, and the world around us.
While there are countless modalities for reconnecting with the body, the essential message remains the same: true healing begins within. As we experience safety once again in our bodies, we are empowered to rewrite the narratives of our past, replacing fear and pain with a sense of resilience and hope.
Psalm 34:18 reminds us that even in our brokenness, God is near, offering solace and salvation to those who are crushed in spirit. This divine promise helps us know that we are not alone and that, with God's help, we can overcome the traumas that have held us captive for far too long.
