The Call to Responsible Stewardship
"Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need." - Luke 15:13-14
In our exploration of the Prodigal Son's journey, we've uncovered valuable lessons about waiting on God's timing, staying close to our spiritual foundation, and being cautious about our inner circle. Now, let's delve into the often-overlooked aspect of responsible stewardship.
The story is not solely about impatience but also about the consequences of irresponsibility. The young man, in his eagerness to obtain his inheritance, failed to grasp the weight of responsibility that came with it. Often, children desire things without fully understanding the accompanying responsibility, wanting a pet but shirking the care, desiring a car but neglecting regular maintenance.
Similarly, when the Prodigal Son received his inheritance, he lacked the foresight to be a good steward of his newfound wealth. The text reveals a sad truth: "and when he spent all he had." This line epitomizes the consequence of his irresponsibility. Despite having it all, he lost it all.
He spent lavishly on riotous living, squandering his inheritance on temporary pleasures without considering the future. The absence of savings, investments, or a thought for a rainy day left him vulnerable when adversity struck. The severe famine became a harsh reality check, exposing the consequences of his careless spending.
The call to be good stewards of God's blessings and resources echoes through this narrative. As a church, we possess much that our ancestors didn't have, but the question remains: Are we utilizing these resources wisely? In a world where we have more but seem to do less with it, the challenge is to embrace responsible stewardship.
Let this serve as a reminder to be intentional with what God has entrusted to us. Whether it's financial resources, time, talents, or relationships, let's use them wisely, invest for the future, and be prepared for the unexpected. By being good stewards, we align ourselves with God's principles and ensure that the blessings bestowed upon us endure and flourish. May our lives reflect the wisdom of responsible stewardship, bringing glory to God and impacting the world around us positively.
