Avoiding the Drift
"My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity." - Proverbs 3:1-2
In the ever-popular narrative of the Prodigal Son, impatience became the slippery slope that led him away from his moral center and spiritual foundation. The pivotal moment occurs when having obtained his inheritance prematurely, the young man ventures to a distant country. The issue isn't merely leaving his father's house, a customary step for young men; it's the abandonment of his father's values.
The text emphasizes that the young man departed not only physically but also morally and spiritually. His journey to a distant country symbolizes more than a change of location; it signifies a departure from the moral compass, values, and ethos instilled in him by his upbringing. In this new environment, governed by different customs and norms, he found himself susceptible to a set of criteria that clashed with his spiritual foundation.
When he acquired wealth and blessings, the young man abandoned the spiritual practices taught in the temple and synagogue. The rites, rituals, and principles that once guided him were discarded. The text sends a clear message: drifting from one's moral center puts one in a spiritually vulnerable position.
Proverbs 3:1-2 implores us not to forget the teachings and commands that anchor us in spiritual truth. Just as the Prodigal Son's departure led to moral and spiritual vulnerability, so can our drift from God's principles disrupt our connection with Him.
In this journey of faith, remain anchored in your spiritual foundation. Guard against the impatience that could lead you astray. Hold fast to the teachings, commands, and principles that bring peace, prosperity, and a prolonged spiritual life. As you stay rooted, the static of spiritual separation will be replaced by the clear, unwavering connection with your Heavenly Father.
