A Lesson in Patience
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." - Galatians 5:22
In the parable of the Prodigal Son, a significant lesson unfolds as we observe the impatience of the privileged son. Destined to receive an inheritance, he couldn't wait for the appointed time, whether it be at his father's passing or when deemed mature enough. His impatience became the catalyst for a series of unfortunate choices that led him astray.
There was a blessing reserved for the younger son, an inheritance with his name on it. All he had to do was wait for the right time to receive it. Yet, impatience crept in, and he wanted his portion of the wealth immediately. The problem wasn't the desire for his father's blessings, but the insistence on having them at that very moment.
Impatience, as Paul notes in Galatians 5:22, is not a fruit of the Spirit. When we let impatience guide us, we tend to get ahead of ourselves and, more importantly, ahead of God. The rush to obtain what we desire often leads to poor decisions, taking us off the path that God has laid out for us.
Reflecting on the Prodigal Son's impulsive actions, we can draw a parallel to a well-known tagline from Paul Masson wines: "We will sell no wine before its time." This mantra served as a metaphor for life – there's an appointed season for everything. Rushing things before their designated time can have consequences, just as in the son's haste to claim his inheritance.
In your pursuit of God's plan, dreams, and blessings, patience is key. Waiting on God's timing is not a passive act; it's an expression of trust in His wisdom. Just as a fine wine matures over time to reach its peak flavor, so do the blessings God has in store for us. If you're going to stay on the path He has for you, learn the art of waiting. Allow patience to be a guiding force in your decisions, and you'll find yourself not only on the right path but also in perfect alignment with God's appointed time for your life.
