God's Victory, Not Ours
"Vengeance is mine, and recompense, for the time when their foot shall slip; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and their doom comes swiftly." - Deuteronomy 32:35
In our lives, moments of injustice or harm inflicted upon us can ignite a fierce desire for revenge or retaliation. The wounds of betrayal or mistreatment can tempt us to take matters into our own hands, seeking retribution for the pain we've endured. Yet, in the stillness of God's truth, we find an important reminder, the victory belongs to God, and it is not our role to exact vengeance.
Deuteronomy 32:35 declares, "Vengeance is mine, and recompense, for the time when their foot shall slip; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and their doom comes swiftly." These words, spoken by God, are an eternal truth that reverberates through the pages of Scripture. They echo the divine assurance that God is the ultimate arbiter of justice, and He alone holds the authority to mete out recompense.
As human beings, the desire for justice is inherent within us. When wronged, the impulse to retaliate can be powerful. However, the path of retaliation often leads to a cycle of bitterness, perpetuating the pain rather than alleviating it. God's invitation is different — to release the burden of vengeance and trust in His sovereign ability to handle the victory.
The call to refrain from seeking revenge is not a call to passivity or indifference. Instead, it is an invitation to surrender our desire for retribution to the One who sees the entirety of the situation. God's perspective is all-encompassing, and His judgment is just and righteous.
In moments of hurt or betrayal, let us resist the urge to repay evil with evil. Instead, let us echo the words of Romans 12:19: "Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, 'Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.'"
Releasing the need for revenge does not diminish the pain we've experienced; rather, it opens the door for healing and restoration. It allows God to be the orchestrator of justice, ensuring that victory is handled in His perfect way and timing. As we entrust our hurts and grievances to Him, we find freedom in the knowledge that our God is not only just but also compassionate, offering grace to both the wounded and the wrongdoer.
