The Danger of Looking Back
"Jesus replied, 'No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.'" - Luke 9:62
In the ancient narrative of Lot's wife in Genesis 19, a warning is etched about the peril of looking back when we are called to move forward. As destruction loomed over the city of Sodom, the Lord provided a way of escape for Lot and his family, urging them not to linger or cast a backward glance.
The command was clear, "Flee for your life! Do not look behind you, nor stop anywhere in the Plain; flee to the hills, lest you be swept away." However, Lot's wife, in a moment of hesitation, turned to look back, resulting in her transformation into a pillar of salt.
Her fate serves as a cautionary tale for those who, like her, find themselves trapped in the present because they are fixated on the past. Living, but only technically. The danger lies not merely in reminiscing about the past, but in allowing the past to hold us captive, preventing us from embracing the new day, season, and future that God has prepared.
The parallels between Lot's wife and many in our midst are striking. There are those who, despite the opportunity to move beyond the past, remain ensnared by the shackles of nostalgia. The call to flee to the hills symbolizes the invitation to ascend to new heights, to step into a future unburdened by the weight of yesterday. Yet, the tendency to look back, to linger over what once was, can result in a spiritual hardening.
As we navigate our own journeys, let us heed the words of Jesus in Luke 9:62, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." The warning against looking back is not a denial of the past, but a recognition that our future in God's kingdom demands a forward focus. Let us resist the allure of nostalgia that can transform us into pillars of spiritual stagnation. Instead, may we fix our gaze on the path ahead, ready to plow the fields of God's purpose with unwavering commitment and faith.
