Beyond the Title
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." - Colossians 3:23
In our journey to discover our true identity, let's dive deeper into a powerful truth: who we are is not defined by our profession. It's easy to fall into the trap of equating our work with our identity; but the reality is that our profession is what we do, not who we are.
Our society often places a great emphasis on job titles and career achievements. We're asked, "What do you do for a living?" as one seeks to assign a person’s value to their career. However, our true identity goes beyond the confines of our workplace and the tasks we perform.
Think about it—your job is a role you play, a function you fulfill, a way you contribute to society. It's a means through which you provide for yourself and your loved ones. But it's not the sum total of your being. It's not the core of your identity.
Your true identity is about how you treat others, the kindness you extend, the empathy you show, and the love you share. It's about the impact you make on people's lives, and the way you encourage, uplift, and inspire.
When we realize that our profession is just a part of who we are, it frees us from the pressure to constantly prove ourselves in the workplace. We can approach our jobs with diligence and excellence, knowing that our worth is not solely dependent on our career achievements. We can work with purpose, not for human approval, but as an offering to the Lord.
Remember the words of Colossians 3:23, which remind us that whatever we do, we are to do it with all our heart, as working for the Lord. Our work becomes an expression of our faith and a reflection of our inner values. It becomes a way to honor God and serve others, rather than a source of validation or self-worth.
So, let's not allow our profession to define us. Let's embrace the truth that our true identity is rooted in our relationship with God and our character. Whether you're a teacher, a doctor, an artist, or any other profession, your value goes beyond your job title. Your worth is intrinsic, a reflection of the beautiful soul that God has created.
