Trusting in God's Presence
"Be still, and know that I am God." - Psalm 46:10
I once witnessed a scene that left a lasting impression. A child was being dropped off at daycare. As the parent gently placed the child on the floor to join the other kids in play, tears streamed down the child's face. The child's intense need to ensure the parent was present overshadowed the opportunity to create new friendships and experiences.
The child's predicament mirrors our spiritual journey. Just as the child's anxious attachment to the parent hindered the chance to forge meaningful relationships, our own insecurities and anxieties about our connection with God can take our attention off other vital aspects of life.
In the daycare scenario, the child's preoccupation with the parent's presence hindered the child from crawling across the room and engaging with other kids. Similarly, when we become consumed by anxiety and insecurity about our relationship with God, our ability to foster healthy relationships with others can be hindered. Our focus becomes so fixated on ensuring God's nearness that we miss out on the rich opportunity for connections around us.
The child's longing for assurance may have been valid, but the intensity of the focus left little room for growth. Similarly, our incessant need for validation in our relationship with God can overshadow the opportunity to grow in faith and establish meaningful bonds with others. It's a reminder that our pursuit of God should not eclipse our capacity to experience life fully and connect with those around us.
Psalm 46:10 exhorts us to "Be still, and know that I am God." This call to stillness and rest holds profound wisdom. Just as the child needed to release the need for constant parental presence to explore and grow, we too need to find peace in our relationship with God. When we rest in His love and faithfulness, we open ourselves to engage in a more balanced and fruitful life.
The lesson here is clear: while it's natural to seek security in our relationship with God, our constant anxiety and fixation can hinder us from fully embracing the abundant life He offers. By cultivating a sense of peace and trust in our connection with God, we free ourselves to nurture deeper connections with others, enriching our lives and bringing glory to Him.
