Finding Strength in Christ
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” - Philippians 4:13
In the unfolding of Paul's ministry, we encounter a poignant moment when he faced the brutal onslaught of stoning. It wasn't merely an act of punishment; it was a tactic to strike fear into the hearts of those drawn to the message of Jesus. Each stone aimed at Paul's body carried a deeper impact – it bruised the minds of the onlookers, leaving them questioning whether the path of Christ was truly worth it.
In my sanctified imagination, I can hear their whispers: "Is this journey really worth the suffering? Can I withstand the challenges and press on, as Paul did?" Today, someone among us might be wrestling with vicarious trauma. Maybe not directly afflicted, but deeply affected by the trials witnessed. You've seen abuse, addiction, broken relationships, and spiritual hurt around you, and it's left you hesitant, afraid, and on the brink of surrender.
Perhaps you've observed loved ones battling addictions and fear that you too will succumb. Maybe the pain of divorce, both within your family and your circle, has led you to question the feasibility of lasting love. The shadows of spiritual abuse loom, causing apprehension about engaging in a faith community. In the face of these challenges, you might be whispering to yourself, "If that's the path, I'm not even going to try."
Consider the people of Lystra, witnessing Paul's near-death encounter. They must have grappled with doubt, wondering if they could endure such hostility for their faith. Yet, Paul's unwavering commitment inspired courage in others, demonstrating that Christ's strength empowers us to stand firm amid tribulation.
In Philippians 4:13, we find reassurance: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." When vicarious trauma seeks to overshadow our faith, we can find solace in the One who overcame the world. Just as Paul's stoning didn't deter him, Christ's power within us equips us to face adversity head-on.
Yes, vicarious trauma can cast a daunting shadow, but it cannot extinguish the light of Christ's strength within us. As we anchor ourselves in His promises, we discover the resilience to endure, the courage to overcome, and the faith to press on. The challenges we observe need not define our journey. Instead, let's rest in the assurance that through Christ, we can rise above the vicarious trauma and boldly proclaim, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
