When the Saints Go Marching In
"The righteous perish, and no one takes it to heart; the devout are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil. Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death." - Isaiah 57:1-2
The song "When the Saints Go Marching In" has a rich history that dates back to the early 1900s. Enslaved Blacks found hope and release in its lyrics, which spoke to their longing for a reversal of fortunes from the bondage, pain, and anguish they experienced. The apocalyptic imagery in the song, taken from the book of Revelation, spoke to the African-American imagination, offering a message of comfort and encouragement in the face of tragedy and trial.
Similarly, the Jews who experienced the Babylonian conquest found themselves grappling with the trauma of losing their temple, their rites and rituals, and their ability to commemorate the lives of the deceased as they were accustomed. Family members, friends, and religious leaders struggled to move forward while providing comfort to those who had lost loved ones.
But in both cases, there is a message of hope and triumph over adversity. The song reminds us that the saints who experienced tragedy and trial down here will experience victory and deliverance over there. And Isaiah envisioned a dramatic reversal of fortune for those believers in Yahweh who went home to be with the Lord during the conquest of the Babylonians.
As believers, we too can find comfort in the knowledge that our loved ones who have gone before us are in a better place. We can find hope in the promise of a better tomorrow, even in the face of tragedy and trial. And we can take comfort in the fact that we will one day be reunited with our loved ones in a realm that is free from pain, suffering, and sorrow.
Let us hold on to the hope and promise of the future, even as we mourn the loss of those who have gone before us. And let us take comfort in the fact that we serve a God who is sovereign over all things, who has promised to be with us always, even to the end of the age.
