Will You Stay in The Game?
“For the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity.” - Proverbs 24:16
Week 6 of the NFL 2022 season brought the Denver Broncos into a match-up with the Los Angeles Chargers. The game aired during Monday Night Football, and the sports world, including myself, was focused on whether the 2-star quarterbacks for each team would play after sustaining injuries in prior weeks.
Russell Wilson of the Broncos was dealing with a shoulder injury, and Herbert of the Chargers was suffering from a nagging fractured rib. The game was critical to both teams ranking in their conference, and everyone knew that the performance and play of the quarterbacks would be the deciding factor in determining victory or defeat.
The game was a nail-biter. At one point, Wilson was taken out of the game because the pain was too much and it was affecting his performance. But Herbert pressed on and provided leadership and led his team to victory in overtime.
In assessing the outcome of the game, one commentator said something that stuck out to me. He said the difference in this game is that you had one person whose injury sidelined him, and the other who found a way to play through his pain.
As I reflected on that reality, it occurred to me that Justin Herbert isn’t the only one who has sustained an injury. Perhaps not in a ball game, but on the playing field of life. None of us goes through life without being hit, hurt, and knocked down from time to time.
The question isn’t, “Are you going to be knocked down?” It’s, “When you do, are you going to stay in the game?” Proverbs 24:16 says, “For the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity.”
We all are going to be “injured” in some form or another in our lifetimes, not just physically, but mentally, emotionally, or even spiritually. The question is, will you stay in the game?
