The Perfect Wave
“Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest.” - Ecclesiastes 11:4
A while back, I was watching a special on surfing. During the show, there was this guy talking about how surfers are constantly in search of the perfect wave. The perfect wave, he said, has the right amount of curl, a perfect tube, and is just at the right height for the surfer.
The wave is slow enough to be able to do tricks, but fast enough to make the surfer look good. The reef below it is formed so that the wave breaks over it, but the reef is far enough down that if you wipe out, you don’t get slammed into the coral.
He talked about how surfers travel all around the world – to Fiji, Mexico, Hawaii, and Australia – in search of the perfect wave. It is out there somewhere, they believe. But in the end, he said he realized that the perfect wave is elusive. No one has found it yet.
In life, many people are searching for the perfect wave. They want the perfect job, the perfect relationship, the perfect family, and the perfect children. They want the perfect smile, the perfect look, and the perfect body. People spend thousands of dollars and jump through all kinds of hoops and hurdles to obtain perfection.
The problem is that perfection is not possible. It is a target that can never be hit. Ecclesiastes 11:4 says, “Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest.”
When you feel the desire to be perfect, just remember that it’s not about being flawless, but about being the best person you can be for you! If you have done your best, God will do the rest. Flaws are beautiful. Flaws are human. Flaws leave room for growth. Have a flawed day.
