An Accountability Partner
“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” - Proverbs 27:17
As we walk through life pursuing God, there are different people along the way we will need to have by our side. I want to specifically address three different roles we will need in our lives as we live by faith. We have looked at the first two over the last couple of days. Whenever you are struggling to hear from God directly, it is good to have these “specialists” in your life.
What type of specialists, you ask? First, you should have a spiritual advisor. Second, you should have a mental health specialist. Today, we will discuss the need for an accountability partner. This should be someone who you trust and who knows you well. Someone you tell your deepest secrets to and who you trust to tell you about yourself when necessary.
Having an accountability partner is important because it is someone who keeps you in line and on track whenever you veer away from God. But don’t take my word for it. The Bible tells us we need accountability in our lives. Proverbs 27::17, “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”
Your accountability partner should be someone you are comfortable opening up to whenever you are struggling with something. You should be able to trust them to keep it between the two of you, and they should be someone who is not afraid of confrontation if it means having to hold you accountable when you step out of line.
You may not like it when they call you out for something, but that is exactly what you need. Having an accountability partner is important for all of us. It helps us stay the course and reminds us that we can’t just do whatever we please without anyone seeing. But the key is that you must be honest with them.
This life is not easy. If you want to live in a way that honors God, you are going to need to bring others along with you. Having these “specialists” that you can go to for different parts of your life is a huge key to overcoming difficult times. Whenever you struggle to interpret what God is saying to you, look to your specialists. That is what they are there for!
