A Mental Health Advisor
“Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success.” - Proverbs 15:22
Are you “walking alone?” Do you feel like you’re on your own spiritually? Or is your faith journey one that is filled with people who guide you, encourage you, and challenge you in your walk with Christ? If the former is true, then this devotion is for you. We are currently talking about the three types of people you need in your life as you follow Christ.
Yesterday, we looked at the first: a spiritual advisor. You should have someone in your life who challenges you to seek God, search Scripture, and give godly wisdom. You should also have someone who can help navigate your mental health.
Those two words are very trendy in today’s society. Say the words “mental health” and you are bound to get some very strong opinions. The truth is many individuals go to the gym every day. They want to get stronger, lose weight, and become more physically fit. They are prioritizing their physical health.
So why is it that we prioritize our physical health, but so often neglect our mental health? This is no joke, and something we should all be taking very seriously. Whether it is a mental health specialist, a therapist, or a life coach, you should have someone in your life who is trained to understand the human mind that has your best interest at heart.
Too often we ask people for advice who have no business giving us advice. And though they believe they have our best interest at heart, they often do not know what is best for us. It is often the people closest to us that hate to see us hurt. So they try to find quick solutions. They might encourage you to find a quick hook-up, drink a little more, or go out and “have fun.”
Though their intentions may be to flip your spirit, they do not actually know what it is you need the most, as these are quick fixes that don’t truly solve our deeper issues. It can come in different forms, but you should have someone in a role that helps you think through and cope with your emotions and thoughts on a deeper level.
Mental health is a real thing, and it is something you should be nurturing. It always helps to have the assistance of others. Proverbs 15:22 tells us so, “Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success.”
