Hidden In The Word
“For the Word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” - Hebrews 4:12
World-famous comedian Kevin Hart told a story in an interview with Oprah many years ago that when he wanted to become a comedian, his mother told him that she would help him out financially for a year if needed, as he started his comedic career.
Kevin began doing comedy in clubs and other venues, hoping to become a star. But times were tough, he said. After a few months, Kevin started having difficulty paying his bills. And so, he called his mother and asked if she would help him with his rent.
She said, “Kevin, have you been reading your Bible?” Kevin said he was annoyed. He was in a jam. He was in trouble, and he told her he didn’t have time to talk about his faith or God; he needed her to send the money so he could pay his rent. She responded again that she would talk to him about his rent after he spent some time in his Bible.
Kevin again said he was annoyed, even infuriated. A month later he came home and there was an eviction notice on the door of his apartment. And Kevin said he called his mama again and asked her for the money, but she said the same thing, “Have you been reading your Bible, Kevin?”
He got angry with his mother again and eventually hung up the phone. A few hours later, Kevin said he sat down with his Bible to read, but something happened. When he opened the Bible, six checks with the amount of his rent fell out of his Bible. His mother had placed them there before he left for California, but he didn’t see them because he stopped seeking God.
Had he opened his Bible, he would have discovered that he already had what he needed. And you know what? The same is true for you and me. It might not be in the form of rent checks. It may not even be material. But the answers to our problems—the answers we truly need—can be found in God’s Word.
