Go to Jesus
“When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him. But Mary stayed in the house. Martha said to Jesus, ‘Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask for.’” - John 11:20-22
John 11 gives us a great example of what we should do when discouragement or disappointment rears its ugly head in our lives. To give context for today’s key passage, Lazarus, Mary and Martha’s brother, had just died. His sisters were extremely upset upon hearing the news.
But what Martha teaches us is that when you are feeling down, you must keep going to Jesus. John 11:20-22 says, “When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him…. Martha said to Jesus, ‘Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask for.’”
Martha had learned that Jesus was in the proximity of her village, and she ran up the path to meet Him. That stands out because she’s in pain. She’s feeling down. She’s likely hurt that Jesus didn’t come initially when she wanted; but she’s not so discouraged that she doesn’t know to run to him.
And she’s not alone. When Mary is told that Jesus is near, the text says in verse 29 that she “got up quickly, and went to Jesus.” She too was hurt. She too was mourning. She too was feeling down, but she hadn’t reached a point of resignation where she had given up on God.
Just hearing the news that Jesus was in the vicinity was enough to stir something inside of them to make their way to the Master. That is instructive because sometimes the most difficult thing to do when you’re going through tough times is to keep going to Jesus.
Do you believe that He is still the miracle worker He was in John 11? He wants to help you. Even when the solution to your situation may seem like it’s nowhere to be found, keep going to Jesus.
