Be About It
“Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.” - 1 John 3:18
The older you get, the more you realize that trying to be cool, trying to fit in, trying to be liked, and trying to impress others really doesn’t work; because the more you do that, the more you have to do. Jesus had just performed several signs in John 6, and here the crowd wanted Him to do more. The people were still not satisfied.
Maybe you are reading this and you have been running yourself ragged trying to satisfy someone, only to discover that the more you do, the more you have to do because it’s never quite good enough. When you are secure in who you are and in whose you are, you don’t base your relationships on performance, but on what is called “embodiment.”
Embodiment is becoming an expression of a given characteristic or quality, rather than just talking about it. Embodiment is the difference between doing and being. Have you ever met someone who persuaded you to trust their character based on how they talked, but once you got into the relationship, you realized there was no action behind their talk?
I remember years ago there was this relationship expert who wrote books on relationships, did speaking tours on relationships, did all kinds of talk shows on relationships, and was very successful, making a lot of money. And as I was researching her one day, I learned she had just been through her fourth divorce. I was shocked. She was talking about relationships, but she hadn’t been successful in her own.
Embodiment is when you are what you espouse. What do you embody? Do you live what you talk? Do you walk the walk or just talk the talk? 1 John 3:18 says, “Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.”
Don’t just talk about it, be about it. Live what you preach. That is what embodiment is all about. That is what Jesus did, and it is what we should be doing, as well!
