The Bread of Life
“Jesus replied, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty.’” - John 6:35
Let’s set the scene of John chapter 6. Here Jesus is speaking to a crowd, ministering to them. As we looked at yesterday, they questioned His authority. In verse 30 they said, “Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe you. What can you do?”
Despite all that He had done prior to this day, the crowd wanted yet another sign from Jesus for Him to prove Himself. Except on this day, Jesus was not going to give in. Rather than caving into their demands, Jesus does not perform another sign.
He does not give them the miracle they claim they need to substantiate who He is. He does not go out of His way to see if He can please these people. He does not add their demand to His already long list of responsibilities and obligations. He knows they are still hungry, and yet rather than giving them more bread, He draws a line and says, “I am the bread.”
In John 6:35, He says, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty.” Jesus exemplified for us what it looks like to be confident in your identity. Jesus did two things: He told them who He was and He stood on that without needing to please them yet again.
If you want to be like Jesus, stand in your identity. Yes, you are His. Be who you were created to be. Do not waiver. Do all that you were created to do. And then do not compromise just to please others. Jesus had proved who He was. He didn’t need to do so again. And neither do you. If you are authentic in your identity in Christ, it will show. You will not have to step outside of that to please others.
Jesus gave us the ultimate example of what it is like to be who we are, and not to change that for others. The next time you are tempted to do something just to please others, remember what Jesus did. Draw a line and stand in who you are.
