Talking To Yourself
“For she thought to herself, ‘If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.’ Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition” - Mark 5:28
Learning to endure is all about learning to listen to what God says about you and not what others say to you. People may say you’re a failure. People may say you won’t make it. People may say give up, but don’t listen to them.
The woman in Mark 5 never internalized defeat. She didn’t allow what happened and what others said to keep her down. If I were to walk past you and see you on the ground because someone knocked you down, I can say, “shame on them.” But if I come back three days later, and you’re still laying in the same spot, I would want to know what was preventing you from getting up.
You are not responsible for who knocked you down, but you are most definitely responsible for getting back up. This woman kept getting knocked down, but she kept getting back up. And to do that, she had to be persistent. I like the sense that this woman must push and press her way through the crowd.
The Bible says when she heard about Jesus, she pressed her way through the crowd. And perhaps what enabled her to do that is to be found in something that the Gospel of Luke tells us, that the woman said to herself, “If I could touch his garment, I know I would be made whole.”
This woman pressed past the crown by talking to herself, convincing herself to do something that was risky. Both gospels write to suggest that the woman was afraid when she came. But she talks her way past her fears. I like that she talks to herself. Because just like you must be careful who you listen to, you must also be careful who you talk to.
She did not give others the opportunity to talk her out of her opportunity. She knew what she had been through, and she wasn’t stopping until she received her breakthrough. There are times in life when you can’t wait to be encouraged or affirmed by others. You must affirm your own self-worth. There are times you must encourage yourself and speak over yourself!
What do you need to tell yourself? To keep going? To endure? To persist? Whatever it is, stay focused on the goal ahead of you.
