The Good Shepherd
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep.” - John 10:11
As a follower of Christ, you have a special assurance. In the face of life’s uncertainties and in the midst of life’s ups and downs, you don’t have to worry because God will take care of you. In describing Himself as “the good Shepherd,” Jesus understood that sheep are in many ways just like children.
They are helpless. They are defenseless. And without the proper supervision, they are vulnerable. And so, they need a shepherd to watch over them, take care of them, and lead them to new pastures and new places that will enable them to survive and thrive.
When there is tension within the flock, it is the duty of the shepherd to bring peace. And in a world where there is so much confusion, chaos, and uncertainty, as sheep, we need a shepherd to step in and let us know that everything will be all right. That is exactly what Jesus does for us time and time again.
John 10 shows us that Jesus is the Good Shepherd. Verse 9 shows that Jesus is the door, the gate, or the entryway that leads sheep to green pastures. Now Jesus says that He’s not only the gate, but He is also the shepherd who stands at the entrance of the gate to keep His sheep safe from thieves who come to “steal, kill, and destroy.”
Jesus wanted them then and us now to know that He is a unique shepherd, One who is so special that He’ll do what others cannot or will not do. He was distinguishing Himself from the other people and places they were inclined to turn to for help.
And He wants to do the same for you! Jesus has both the heart and the power to protect you in any and every circumstance. He loves you and wants to help you. And as part of the Holy Trinity, He has the power to do just that. Jesus is the Good Shepherd, and the best part is that He is YOUR Good Shepherd!
