Thick and Thin
“You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.” - Matthew 7:9-11
I had a conversation not too long ago with a good friend of mine. This friend was the last of my friends to become a father. I remember when he sent me a picture of his newborn baby, and as I looked at the photo, adoring the smile on his face, I couldn’t help but think of the world this little baby would grow up in.
When I called him, I said, “Man, that baby looks so at peace. Little does she realize what she’s gotten herself into by coming into the world at such a time as this!” He agreed and we began to discuss all the chaos, confusion, and crisis that characterize our world.
Daily we are inundated on the news and on social media with stories of violence, tragedy, poverty, and war. Not just on streets in foreign lands, but on streets right here at home. But what stood out to me in the midst of this discussion was my friend’s response, regarding the vulnerability of his daughter.
He said, “There is indeed a lot of chaos in the world, but my child won’t have to worry because I’m going to do whatever I have to do to take care of my baby.” He went on to say that no matter how unsafe, insecure, or unstable our world seems, he is going to protect, provide for, and be present for his baby through thick and thin.
As I heard his heart, it dawned on me that it must be the same with God. The world we encounter and the issues we face are so shocking, so traumatic, and so upsetting. Yet, God tells us not to be afraid because He’ll do whatever it takes to take care of His children. May we find peace and comfort in that truth today!
