The Aftermath
“In that day Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this will be its name: ‘The Lord is our Righteousness.’” - Jeremiah 33:16
In Jeremiah 33, the prophet tells us that our God is a God who is always ready to help. He promises us that He will help us, and we know His promises are sure. What Jeremiah does in this chapter is: assures us of God’s help, explains the application of God’s help, reminds us of the timing of God’s help, and finally, describes the aftermath of God’s help.
The Lord declares through the mouth of Jeremiah that there would be a name change for the city of Jerusalem. Verse 16 says, “In that day Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this will be its name: ‘The Lord is our Righteousness.’”
These lines draw a picture of God’s grace and His commitment to the promise He has made, even when they appear to be nullified by our rebellious realities and negative circumstances. The name change is to confirm that God can take messes we make, turn things around, and make them all better.
He says, “Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will live in safety.” God is certifying that He CAN and He WILL make things right for His people, and He wants them then and us now to be comforted even though they (and we) may be having a hard time. Amid devastation and the detrition the people were witnessing, God comes along and promises to restore their lives and change how their city would be known.
The reason this had significance in context is that the characteristic of pagan gods is that people had to work for them. The first thing you must do is to save your gods. Pagan gods can’t do for themselves, so others must work for them. The God of the Bible says, “You don’t have to save me. I am going to save you. You don’t have to pick me up when I’m down. I am going to pick you up when you are down!”
The result is that God is going to rebuild what was torn down, fix what is broken, and take back what the enemy has stolen. May that truth give you hope as you seek God’s redemption in your own life!
