The Calvary
“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” - Psalm 46:1
One of the genres of television shows that was popular when I was a child was Westerns. Truthfully, I came up at the end of the era of Westerns, but I remember them because my father watched them. Shows like Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Rifleman, and Cheyenne were all popular when I was coming up.
And while I do not remember any of the characters, I do recall a common plot that frequently occurred in many of the storylines. Whenever the good guys were in trouble, whenever their enemies had them pinned in and their backs up against the wall, they would be rescued by a band of soldiers riding in on horseback.
The calvary came to save the day, and when people saw them, their countenance changed. They went from sad to glad, from frightened to uplifted, and invariably, someone would yell out, “Look, the calvary is on the way.” The arrival of the calvary meant that things were about to turn around, and what appeared to be the end of the story was just the beginning because help was on the way.
Calvary was a reinforcing band of specially trained soldiers who came to help during difficult, dark, and dismal times. While the army on the ground seemed defeated, they knew the defeat was only temporary because help was on the way.
Are you currently in need of help? Christ is the ultimate calvary. Psalm 46:1 tells us, “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” When the calvary is on your side, no matter where you find yourself, like the cowboys in the old Westerns, you are never in trouble for long.
Call on Jesus today, for He is the ultimate Calvary!
