Aware of Your Weakness
“Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.” - 1 Timothy 4:16
As we have mentioned in the last two days, Abraham had a clear Achilles heel. But the truth is all of us have an Achilles heel. All of us are like Abraham. We have areas wherein we are strong, but we also have areas that we need to work on as well.
The first thing you must do is identify your weakness. Perhaps Abraham is still dealing with this issue, his inclination to minimize his marriage to Sarah, because he forgets that even after 25 years of walking with God, 25 years of praying to God, and 25 years of following God, that God is not going to see him fail and he does not need to operate in fear or inadequacy.
Awareness of your weakness is the first step to getting victory over it. Having a good spiritual IQ means being aware of your moral blind spots. It’s why Socrates talked about the perils and the pitfalls of the unexamined life, and it is precisely when you think that you are beyond reproach or beyond falling that you fall.
When was the last time you took inventory of the areas of your life where you’re most vulnerable? What is your Achilles heel? Had Abraham been more aware of his weaknesses, he would have been able to recognize how this experience in Genesis 20 triggered the same things that it did in Genesis 12.
See, we must be aware not just of what we do, but why we do it. We need to be aware not just of our actions but the root causes that trigger our actions. Oftentimes we address the symptoms of our challenges and not the root of them.
What weakness are you vulnerable to falling back into? What triggers it? These are important questions to ask yourself so that you are aware both of what it is and what causes it. The battle doesn’t start until we are aware. Give some thought to these two questions, pray, and see what God reveals to you about them.
