Good… Enough?
“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” - Galatians 6:9
Long before Apple and Samsung were the major players in the cell phone market, there was Blackberry. Blackberry, owned by a Canadian company called Research in Motion, was king of the hill. And in 2009, their smartphones were the apple of everyone’s eye.
The company controlled almost 50% of the smartphone market, and everyone from Bill Gates, to President Obama, to Oprah declared that they couldn’t live without their Blackberry. The company rose to greatness because their phones had an actual physical keyboard built into the phone, and their software allowed users to access their email right in their hand.
While that may not sound very impressive today, in the early 2000s, that feature and that capability gave Blackberry the edge, especially with businesses and corporate clients. But five years later, in 2014, Blackberry went from 50% market share down to 1%.
So what killed Blackberry you might ask? Well, case studies have been done in business schools around the world trying to understand the strategic missteps and the decisive move that caused executives to destroy the company that at one time was Apple before there was Apple.
It was the inability of their co-founder and co-CEOs ability to reimagine, rethink, update, and evolve what he had. His unwillingness to make a phone that had a touchscreen, could surf the internet, and was shown in color, cost the company big time. He could not see beyond his current success.
This CEO’s name was Mike Lazaridis. Many do not know his name, but they know Steve Jobs. Both were talented inventors, but they had two totally different mindsets. One played it safe in a season of success, and the other was determined to take a good thing and make it better.
Blackberry’s downfall is a clear reminder of what can happen when people, fail to evolve, fail to change, and fail to innovate. God never wants you to stop growing. He has so much more in store for you. Galatians 6:9 says, “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” So don’t be afraid to keep moving forward and bettering yourself. You will never stop being able to become more like Jesus while you’re on this earth.
