Your Lifeline
“Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me.” - Psalm 54:4
In 1989, LifeLine began running a commercial that went viral. Its tagline became the mantra of just about every television watcher. The catchphrase simply said, “Help, I’ve fallen, and I can’t get up.” Actress Dorothy McHugh, also known as Mrs. Fletcher, uttered this line in the company’s medical alarm and protection ad campaign.
Their idea was to help seniors and disabled people by getting them to invest in an audio-activated pendant that would allow them to contact a dispatch service should they find themselves in a position where they could not reach the phone. The dispatcher would inform Mrs. Fletcher that help is on the way. It really was a good idea back then! That is, it was a good idea for those who may live alone and those who might be susceptible to a physical fall or bodily injury.
But what about those of us who have experienced mental or emotional falls? Where is the “lifeline” for people when tragedy strikes or when trauma torments their lives? And what about when disappointment, pain, and heartache linger in the heart, the mind, and the soul, and cause one to be perpetually sad?
You might be reading this and nodding your head right now because you have fallen emotionally or spiritually, and can’t get back up. You are held hostage by the wounds and the injuries inflicted upon you in the past, perhaps the incident is months, years, or maybe even decades old. Yet the anguish and the emotional turmoil you’re feeling can feel as fresh as if it all happened this morning.
Being a child of God does not make you immune to heartbreak and hard times. Troubles will come your way. But as a believer, every child of God should rejoice. As the old hymn says, troubles might come our way, and when it does “we have to cry sometimes. We lay awake at night, but that’s all right, because we know that Jesus will fix it, after while.”
Jesus is, and always will be, your personal lifeline. Whatever hurt you may experience, it will be all right, because we know that Jesus will fix it! Fall seven times and get back up eight. The important thing is that you must get back up!
