How Do You Handle What You Cannot Handle?
“Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth? Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms, as a nurse carries an infant, to the land you promised on oath to their ancestors? Where can I get meat for all these people? They keep on wailing to me, ‘Give us meat to eat!’” - Number 11:12-13
How do you handle what you feel you cannot handle? Many people are asking this question. According to surveys, alcohol use, drug use, and overeating, especially during this pandemic, have increased as people turn to carnal vices hoping to make things better. We know these methods of coping are temporary any only exacerbate the real issues.
The Barna Group reported some years ago that upwards of 1,500 men and women walk away from the ministry every month because of frustration, burnout, anxiety, and depression. This upsetting statistic proves that being a believer doesn’t exempt you from feeling burned out.
There is an amazing scene in the book of Numbers where the great emancipator himself, Moses, one of our heroes of the faith, is heard pouring his heart out to God in agony and frustration. The conversation is so surreal that it’s hard to believe the words are coming from a man who is used as God’s vessel. Moses has been providing faithful leadership to God’s people in Israel.
He has braved the dangerous challenge of re-entering Egypt, a hostile territory where he was a fugitive, now on a rescue mission to deliver Israel and to tell Pharaoh that God said, “Let my people go!” By Numbers 11, the children of Israel had departed Egypt’s city limits and are long gone.
They are found wandering in the wilderness. The people are growing weary, and they are extremely frustrated and fatigued. They are ready to get to the long-awaited land of promise so they can finally have some peace, quiet, and fulfillment. But in accordance with God’s purpose and plan, it is not time to stop yet. They must keep moving.
How do you handle what you feel you cannot handle? Even Moses became frustrated with God at this point. We will talk more about God’s answer tomorrow. But just know, He came to Moses’ rescue. God had an answer, He always does. He had one for Moses, and He has one for you. There is nothing you cannot handle when you serve the God of heaven!
