Fasting For Discipline and Self-Control
“But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” - 1 Corinthians 9:27
Over the last week, we have discussed the importance of fasting. If you are a believer who wants to grow your intimacy with Christ, hear from God on a certain matter, obtain a breakthrough, purge your life from sin and addiction, and/or increase your faith, fasting is a great tool. There is one more great reason to fast that we will consider, and that is to gain discipline and self-control.
If you want to do anything great in life, discipline and self-control are two things you must have. Without discipline, you will not hold yourself to the standards you need, and you will not execute the plans you make. Without self-control, you will fall into temptation and waste time on things that do not bring you or your life value.
God has big plans for your life, plans to prosper you and not harm you (Jeremiah 29:11). He created you to do things greater than you could ever imagine. But in order to do those things, it takes discipline and self-control to stay on track. Proverbs 25:28 tells us, “A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.” When we do not have self-control, we are vulnerable to a world desperate to gain our attention and lead us into things that are not in our best interest.
Do you struggle with discipline and self-control? Do you lack the ability to hold yourself accountable for what you said you were going to do, or what you said you were NOT going to do? If the answer to either of these questions is yes, then it might be time to fast.
You will be amazed at your growth when you give up the distractions and replace them with time spent with your Heavenly Father!
