Fasting For Intimacy
“And then she was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.” - Luke 2:37
As we mentioned yesterday, there are many reasons for Christ-followers to fast. Fasting can not only be done in many different forms, whether it be from food, social media, or a bad habit, but it is also done for many different reasons. One of those reasons is for greater intimacy with God.
When you fast, you are not only letting go of something that means something to you, but you are freeing up your time! It can be time you take to stop and eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It can be the time you spend endlessly swiping on TikTok. It can be the time you cut out to feed an addiction. Whatever it is you choose to fast from, you free up time that was once taken for something else, and that time now gives you a new opportunity to change direction.
This is so important because you are prioritizing God by sacrificing something of importance to you to spend time alone with God. And you show reliance on God by going to Him when you want to go to your hobby, activity, or addiction.
This process is designed to shift your energy directly towards God. You not only grow your relationship with Christ but to give you greater intimacy with Him. He is the one who is always there when you are struggling. He is the one who knows how difficult it is for you. And He is waiting to fellowship with you.
You are not alone. When you are fasting, and you cut out something you have relied on for so long, you have to find something else to rely on. And that something is God. When you fast, you will find greater intimacy with God than anything you have previously known!
