Surrounded By God’s Peace
“Lord, do good to those who are good, to those who are upright in heart. But those who turn to crooked ways the Lord will banish with the evildoers. Peace be on Israel.” - Psalm 125:4-5
When the walls of life feel like they are caving in, and you just don’t know what to do, or where to turn, there is one place you can turn, and that is to God because although the walls of your circumstances might surround you, God surrounds those walls. He is in control, and He has assurances just for you. Yesterday, we talked about the first assurance: you are surrounded by God’s promises.
But you are not only surrounded by His promises. You are also surrounded by His peace. We see in Psalm 125 that the author had lived in turmoil while in exile. They were carried away in the aftermath of war, lived in a culture of slavery, and were freed only after the war with Persia and Babylon. It had been a long time since they had known true peace.
The experience of the Israelites is similar to the experiences we sometimes go through. Many of us have struggled to find, get, and keep our peace. The struggle for many of us is peace in our homes, peace on the job, peace in relationships, and peace in our family units. The great fight for many of us is a fight for peace. But the psalmist says in verse 5 that the believer is surrounded by peace.
The text says, “Peace be upon Israel.” What you should know is that the psalmist rejoices over the peace of God at the same time they are facing the threat of the enemy. What the psalmist understands is that real peace is not the absence of problems, but rather the peace that God gives in the midst of our problems.
Do you have peace? Remember, peace is not about the problems you have. It actually has nothing to do with that. Peace recognizes that no matter what is happening in your life, you have an inner calmness that God is in control. You have the assurance that He is with you, and He is not only surrounding your situation, but He is surrounding you with peace.
