Surrounded By God’s Promises
“Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.” - Joshua 21:45
It may feel like you are surrounded by the enemy, but you are ultimately surrounded by the Lord. You can be confident that in the face of your trials there are four assurances God has provided for you. You can recall these anytime you are feeling overwhelmed by the enemy and overwhelmed by life’s challenges.
The first assurance you have is that you are surrounded by God’s promises. The return from exile was seen as a new birth of freedom for the returning exiles. One could argue that the songs of ascent reflect the faith of a people resistant to being mistreated, dominated, and terrorized by the Babylonians. They are through with Babylon, ready to return to Jerusalem.
But a return to Jerusalem is not just a homecoming. It is a return and reminder to the people of God of the promises He made to them. God promised Abraham He would be the father of many nations. He never told him his people would be exiled. But as his descendants return from exile, they would remember the promise God made to Abraham.
God told David that through his lineage a Messiah would come. He did not tell him that before the Messiah would come, his beloved Jerusalem would be destroyed. Yet, the people returned to Jerusalem waiting on the promise! Joshua 21:45 tells us, “Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.”
Just as God made promises to the Israelites, He makes promises to you. There are biblical promises that, as a believer, you can claim. And God is sure to hold up His end of that promise. No matter what situation you find yourself in, or what obstacles you face, you can find assurance in the fact that God’s promises are solid. He will not fail you.
