I Will Not Be Moved
“Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.” - Psalm 125:1
Psalm 125 belongs to a genre of biblical poetry called the “Songs of Ascent.” Some scholars believe that these songs were written by the Israelites upon their return from exile in Babylon. They had been humiliated during the destruction of Jerusalem as they were carried away into bondage and captivity in a foreign land.
They have had their sense of security taken from them. Israel has grown up in exile and they now know that the world is a dangerous, vulnerable, and insecure place. But the fact that life is hard does not stop them from praising and worshipping the Lord.
In the mind of the people of Israel, it was God who preserved and protected them while in exile; it was God who provided for them when they were cast out and cast down, and it was God who set them free and allowed them to return home. So, these formerly enslaved people return to their homeland singing these songs of ascent.
They sang songs about how they made it through and who brought them through. The psalmist does not allow those who want to destroy them to get them down. They move forward because they are convinced that those who trust in the Lord will never be moved.
What about you? Can you relate to the psalmist? Or have you let the troubles of life shake you? In the first verse of Psalm 125, the psalmist says, “Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.” Do not allow your circumstances, situations, or people to shake you. Trust in the Lord, so you too can be like Mount Zion, never shaken but enduring forever!
