Drinking The Water
“But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” - John 4:14
Yesterday, we talked about the need for water — not actual liquid water, but the spiritual water when we are parched. See, when you stop spending time with Christ and stop seeking Him, you will become thirsty. This often happens to us when life is going great.
We think we do not need Him when life is good. Everything is going great! What could we possibly need Jesus for? And then all of a sudden, the tragedies, hardships, and struggles of life inevitably hit us. And then what? What do we have to draw from? We are dehydrated; there is no water in our system. This is why you do not need to drink only when you are thirsty, but all the time.
Christ never wants you to stop seeking Him. There is always more to know, new ways to grow, and lessons to learn. Now, when difficulties strike and you are in the Word, when you are praying and communicating with God regularly, He can speak to you and give you the insight you need to handle the difficult times in life.
So how do you stay hydrated? By drinking water, of course. But understand, you must actively drink. That means the responsibility is on you. The water does not force itself into your body. You must be intentional about drinking it. And the same goes for pursuing God. You must actively pursue Him. And when you do, He will hydrate you with exactly what you need.
God always knows what is best for you. He will give you what you need when you need it. But you must continue to drink. This means continuing to pray, regardless of whether life is going great or nothing is going right. It also means reading His Word to better understand His will for your life. When you seek Him, He will give you living water, water that will never make you thirsty again.
John 4 says, “But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” When you have Christ, there is nothing else you need in life. But without Him, you will always be left needing more.
