Remain Open To God’s Word
“After this, the Word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: ‘Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” - Genesis 15:1
As a believer in Christ and someone who has a personal relationship with Him, you might feel as though God has promised you something or made it abundantly clear He has something for you. There is just one thing… you must wait to receive it. You might be asking God, “Am I going to make it? Am I going to receive what You promised? Will You do for me what You said You would do?”
We must remember God is always faithful. And He will do what He promises. But what about in the meantime? In the opening verses of Genesis 15, Abram models for us how to deal with divine delays. When we are convinced God has made a promise, but He seems to be taking His time, we must remain open to God’s Word.
Genesis 15 occurs after a series of challenging events that happen in the prior chapter. Most notably, Abram has been at war and fought to secure the return of his nephew, Lot, and then finds himself in the valley of Shaveh trying to figure out what is next. It is there that the Word of the Lord came to Abram.
The text opens, “After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision.” God, knowing what Abram needed, at the time he needed it, spoke a word to address his deepest frustrations. For that word to be planted in his heart, Abram had to remain open to God’s Word.
Are you open to God’s Word? Are you waiting for Him to answer, studying His Word in anticipation? Sometimes in the process of waiting, we can become frustrated and let our emotions keep us from staying open to the answers we are waiting for. Perhaps for you to receive what God wants to give you, there is a part you must play. But to find out what part that is, you must remain open to God’s Word and wait for further instruction. Trust me, you do not want to miss what He has for you. No matter how long it takes, stay open to Him, because just like He did with Abram, God will send you exactly what you need when you need it most.
