A Personal God
“For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead.” - Isaiah 43:3
Growing up I used to watch old television shows and sitcoms that were popular back in the 50s and 60s. In those shows, I’d often see something that was quite shocking. Whenever people got sick, doctors would take the time to come to the home of the person needing treatment and would provide care and treatment for the ill patient in the house.
Not only did they provide care for the sick person, but they also brought candy and treats for others in the house as well. This was intriguing to me because when we get sick, the doctor does not come to us. We have to go to him. And when you get to the doctor’s office, you have to deal with a series of insurance regulations, paperwork, and a screening process just to see the doctor.
While this might not be the system in place now, there is still one Physician who makes house calls. You might know Him as The Lord God Almighty. This is significant because there used to be real theological debates in the ancient world about where one could find God. Is God just in the heavens, disinterested in the affairs of humankind as some religious and philosophical schools taught?
Or is God down here, in the earth, present with us? And if God is down here, where is He? Is He in nature? Is He in the plants, the animals, and the trees? Or is God confined to the hallowed halls and ornate temples that various people have constructed for His honor, and His worship? As Moses suggests in Scripture, God is not just out there residing in some celestial abode in the sky. God is not just manifested in the elements of the air and nature. God is not just confined to the cloistered confines of a cathedral, temple, or religious place of worship.
God can, does, and wants to show up at your house. The Bible provides so many clear pictures and portraits of what happens when God makes house calls and visits our homes. We will go into further detail on this in the coming days. But for today, you should know that God is a personal God, and He is not just “out there” somewhere. He made you and He wants to have a personal relationship with you. God wants to come into your home.
