Unresolved Injury
“The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.” - Psalm 9:9-10
When you read the Story of Jacob in Genesis 25-32, you see the story of someone who had an unresolved injury. He was a victim of religious and parental abuse and suffered from the time he was born in a household that mistreated him, judged him, labeled him, and projected their own biases and insecurities upon him.
Day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, he had to grow up in a home with parents who rather than seeing him as a success, saw him as a menace. Rather than treating him like an equal, treated him like a pariah. Rather than showing him love and affection, showed him suspicion and contempt. And that is the worst kind of environment for a child to be raised in.
Jacob carried this psychological injury with him all his life, and the reason he may have manipulated to get ahead as a teenager and young adult is because all his life he internalized the messages and the mental abuse of those around him; and because they said he was a deceiver from birth, he began to believe what they said.
When you read Genesis 32, you see that Jacob felt guilty despite the toxic relationship with Esau. He tried to move on by getting married, having a family, and working for his uncle. But he could not escape the pain of his past. Jacob had an unresolved injury from his past that was hindering his progress and holding him down.
Do you have an unresolved injury holding you back? Yesterday we talked about how you can change the course, how you can escape the judgments and labels others place on you. But it starts with knowing who you are, and who you are not. You are NOT the things that have happened to you. Those things do not make up your identity. Your identity is found in Christ.
Seek Him, pray to Him, and ask Him to help you as you wrestle with the things of your past. It is time to move forward, but first we must understand that to go forward, you cannot take the past with you!
