A Test of Obedience
“Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done.” - Luke 22:42
The fifth test God uses to strengthen us is a test of obedience. Jesus is the ultimate example of not only obedience, but endurance with his death of the cross. Jesus knew that this was going to be difficult task. He knew he was going to suffer, be betrayed, experience rejection, and face separation from those he cared about. Still, he submitted to the will of the Father, saying, “not my will but yours be done” (Luke 22:42).
The result was not only Jesus being exalted to Kingship (Philippians 2:9-11), but we were able to receive forgiveness and salvation. Obedience led to relief and exaltation.
As a believer, God will test you. When the refiner puts metal in the fire, the heat is hot, but it is for a purpose. The heat is not to destroy the metal. Rather it is to develop the metal, to make it better. The test is painful, but it is purposeful. When the refiner takes the metal out of the fire, he looks at the metal to see if he can see his image in the metal.
God is refining us to be able to see His image in us and see if we can be trusted with the blessing He has given us. It is only a test. It is not to harm you, but to help you. It is designed to strengthen your faith and solidify your walk with God. It might be rough, but the purpose is righteous. It might be hard to endure, but it’s holy in its intention.
So rather than complaining, realize that God is just preparing you. Your obedience is the key to unlock the door to your elevation. The late Daryl Coley once sang, “He’s preparing me for something I cannot handle right now. He’s making me ready, just because He cares. He’s providing me with what I’ll need, to carry out the next matter in my life.”
God is not testing you to hurt you. He will put the metal to the fire, but you will not be burnt. He is preparing you for what is coming next in your life. Let God mold your metal for something great!
