A Test Of Humility
“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.” - James 4:10
A fourth test God uses to strengthen us is a test of humility. In the book of Exodus, Moses (an Israelite who given up by his mother to escape death) was adopted by Pharaoh's daughter in Egypt and grew up privileged. He became general of the Egyptian army and was popular amongst the Egyptians (the privileged) and the Israelites (the oppressed).
Recognizing where he came from, he could not stand to see an Egyptian harming an Israelite and killed the Egyptian. Moses went from honor to humility because he ultimately gave up the comforts of Egypt to free the Israelites from bondage, making him a fugitive in Egypt. In return, he became a leader amongst the Israelites and found favor with God for shepherding His people.
Laboring for God will require humility. And this is counter-intuitive to the flesh. We often want the glory and the credit. We often want the accolades and the lavish life. However, God cannot bless us with a lot if He cannot trust us to not to be prideful with a little.
The fact is that being a Christian will not always be glamorous. Our tests are what keep us humble and remind us that we are not in control of everything. We NEED God to work in and through our lives. We will make mistakes, as Moses did with the Egyptian he killed. However, if we humble ourselves before God, He can turn our situation around from us glorifying ourselves to us glorifying Him.
There is no greater comfort than in knowing that you are in the will of God and that you are humble enough to receive correction and direction. God is the potter, and we are the clay. When we let go of our prideful spirit, God can trust us with more.
Do a humility check. Are you open to correction? Are you able to submit your will to God’s will? Does God get the glory above any and everyone else? Keep God first and your plans will succeed.
