Promoters of a Second Chance
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” - 1 John 1:9
As Christians, we should strive to be more like Jesus. One of the ways we can do this in a way that encourages, challenges, and strengthens other Christians, is to help release people to their future rather than holding them hostage to their past. Instead of punishing people because of their past mistakes, we should be promoters of a second chance.
I once heard the story of a young mischievous child who kept throwing rocks at the window of an old church. Every time he was caught, the Pastor would give him a sermonette on the importance of doing right and caring about the community. After a while, the child started to remember those sermons and not only stopped throwing the rocks but ended up later joining the church and becoming a minister at the church.
The word “sin” is an archery term that means to miss the mark. We all have missed the mark and done some things that we are not too proud of. However, extending grace to others is exactly what God does for us on a daily basis.
We are not called to be encouragers of sin. However, we can provide opportunities for grace when others mess up or do us wrong. Not only will it show our good will, but we will reflect the heart of God and show others that God is forgiving. So, even when it’s difficult, be a promoter of a second chance, as God has given you a second, third, and 100th chance.
